Cubing / ArtificielAudio / vidéo live
To make peace with this tiny instrument of mathematical torture that is the Rubik cube, it must be rediscovered in the hands of the group Artificiel, who alters its original function, transforming it into… a musical instrument. In Cubing, this playful object is the starting point of an audiovisual performance that explores the relationship between color and sound. Each performer manipulates a Rubik cube under a video camera. The latter is connected to a computer which, when recognizing the interface colors, sets off a chain of digital treatment, creating an experimental music composition. The artists do not have access to a computer; their only instrument is the cube that they play by varying the faces shown to the camera. Each “instrument” has its own acoustic identity, the variations of which are delivered by the amplifier of an electric guitar. Midway between a rock show, the nostalgia of the 1980s, and genial technological frenzy, Cubing is also an original and inclusive study of the musical act. About Artificiel Artificiel is a digital creation band based in Montreal. Its artists include Alexandre Burton, Julien Roy, and Jimmy Lakatos, three versatile musicians whose broadly diversified work goes from composition to digital stringed-instrumentation. Together, they work concepts that travel through the realm of new media, music, and video through installations and performances. Their cross-disciplinary production enlists the world of experimental music and visual arts, as well as electronic art manifestations. The installations Bulbes, presented at the 2004 Mois Multi, and Beyond6281 (2004), wich explore the relation between sound and light by using incandescent light bulbs as a starting point. Both along with the performance Cubing (2006), were seen in various festivals and museums in Europe and North America. |
